Following many spy photos, Jeep has finally unveiled the new Cherokee mid-sized SUV ahead of its world debut at the New York Auto Show. The new model revives the Cherokee nameplate in the U.S, switches to a front-engined/front-wheel-drive platform, and boasts a more radical design.
Up front, the 2014 Cherokee features two-set of lights; cat-like daytime running lights and indicators on top and boxy headlights below. These are flanked by Jeep’s trademark seven-slot grille. The lower-part of the front bumper is inspired by the recent Grand Cherokee facelift  and features a chrome highlight.
Although no images of the rear were released, we expect horizontally-mounted tail-lights, larger bootlid handle, and revised bumper. Plastic body cladding, chrome accents, and a swoopy windowline complete the exterior enhancements.
Leaked photos indicate that the new Cherokee will possess a visually-appealing, higher quality cabin. A large screen dominates the Cherokee’s centre stack, with the overall look reminiscent of the larger Grand Cherokee.
Unsurprisingly, the marque’s 8.4-inch UConnect touchscreen infotainment system will be available, as will a large TFT screen located in the instrument cluster.

Jeep has remained silent on powertrains and transmission options, although speculation suggests we can expect a 4-cylinder, 2.4-litre TigerShark unit and a 3.6-litre VVT PentaStar based 3.2-litre V6 petrol engine. European markets are expected to feature a 2.0-litre CRD engine and possibly a 3.0-litre V6 CRD. These will be paired to a 6-speed manual or nine-speed automatic transmission that will drive the front-wheels. Four-wheel-drive will be available as an option and the 3.2-litre V6 is expected to enjoy a 32mpg highway figure.

The new Cherokee will ride on a revised version of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta‘s platform, which means that it will feature unibody construction and four-wheel independent suspension. It will also be lighter than its successor, which currently weighs in at 1,808kg (3,985lbs).
A wide array of cost-options will be offered on the new Cherokee, such as numerous four-wheel-drive systems, metallic and pearlescent paint, fabric “Sky Slider” sunroof, and a UConnect multimedia system.
The 2014 Jeep Cherokee will be built at the company’s plant in Toledo, Ohio and sales are slated to begin in the third quarter of 2013.
